‘Elegìa delle cose perdute’ (‘Elegy of lost things‘) is a rewriting of the novel ‘I Poveri'(‘The Poor‘) by the Portuguese writer and historian Raul Brandao. The paintings that form the narrative become the map of a journey through the (interior) places of the characters in ‘I Poveri’: derelict and yet clumsy figures bordering on the clownish, united by the same feeling of melancholic nostalgia and desire for redemption. The space between the observer and these stories (and between these stories and the shared dream they tend towards) is a distance with a Leopardian flavour, a grotesque parade of figures in transit, like clowns in a popular theatre that flourishes from a common yearning, that needs no frills to happen, that is told everywhere, in a meadow, in an alley, a courtyard, any place of life (M. Augé), a post office in front of the day that is ending. Bodies and landscape converse and recognise themselves in a common desire, a somersault of thought, abandonment to the suspended and cyclic time of a waltz, the form of a nostalgic sadness in its cyclic and suspended progress, which asks to be celebrated, crossed, within a desire not of possession but of belonging. And here it is that within this logic all ideas of possible misery or poverty suddenly vanish, there is no longer anything that can really be lost.
