The Transhumance project is a research project by French artist Marie Bruel, which investigates the age-old human activity of transhumance, that is the seasonal movement of flocks and herds in rural areas, from both an anthropological and artistic point of view. Coming from a mountainous area herself, Marie has explored this ancient practice through study and travel, translating the movement of transhumance into a choreographic language for the body. In particular, starting from the action of crossing places that is typical of transhumance, the project focuses on the use of public space such as urban commercial spaces, squares, markets and meeting places of various kinds that constitute a window of interaction with social flows and crowds. The performative practice in this project therefore observes and reinterprets the interaction between human and non-human, showing how the movement of a group can become dance and collective will.
The project will open to the public with workshops, discussions and a final presentation.
Dancer-performer, choreographer and teacher, Marie Bruel trained at the Adage training centre in Bordeaux, France. Since 2021, she has been working between France and Morocco, collaborating with various choreographers and participating in numerous artistic projects. In 2023, she created her first choreographic solo, No cage without, with the support of the Goethe-Institut Maroc and DABATEK. In 2024, she founded her own dance company, a+, in Pau, in the Atlantic Pyrenees. Her works come to life through different forms of expression and explore the human experience by highlighting the aspirations, interactions and social dynamics that shape our existence. Through a dialogue between dance, visual arts and site-specific creations, her research investigates the intimate and collective mechanisms that constitute us.
A journey into the aura of key practices and figures of spirituality and performance art between body, gesture and vision.
