Perle Sparse - Perles fanné par tous is an installation with performative interventions that focuses on the theme of travel and returning to one's country of origin. A journey from Mauritius to Europe and back, a multimedia and imaginary geographical map, a narrative and sensory journey through memories, and a reflection on what one carries when migrating. One of the founding elements of the work is water, associated with the movement of the diaspora. Sobah retains the image of an immense sugarcane field stretching out in front of her grandmother's house as a defining memory of her country of origin. The plantations recall the violent context of the slave society that held Mauritius captive for centuries but also evoke the origins of a true unifier of the diaspora: séga music. Like an immaterial form of baggage, Vashish Sobah's mother and father brought these songs - central to religious rituals alongside water - to Italy: the sea, which in Hindu culture represents a deity; the river, where families would gather to wash clothes; and finally, Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, which remains a place of gathering and community - another life, on another island.

Vashish Soobah is a visual artist born in Sicily to Mauritian parents, raised in Northern Italy, trained in London, and currently based in Milan. His work - spanning video, photography, performance, and sound - explores the root causes and underlying social mechanisms of African migration within a global context, particularly its implications in Western societies. His projects stem from the need to critically and intricately address his own positioning as a Mauritian diasporic subject in Italy - specifically, as a brown (non-black) Afro-descendant with genealogical ties to Southeast Asia. Through his first documentary, Nanì (screened at the 28th FESCAAAL Festival), filmed in Mauritius, Soobah began exploring his family history through the perspective of his grandmother, a witness to key political and economic events in the country. Following a matrilineal approach in his research, he places significant importance on his mother, his main reference point in rediscovering and preserving Mauritian traditions and spirituality. Spirituality also plays a crucial role in his work on the Mauritian diasporic community, particularly in Milan. Another cornerstone of his practice is his engagement with water, which he associates with the displacement of the diaspora. His works have been exhibited at Madragoa (Portugal), MA*GA (Gallarate), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Guarene), Almanac Inn (Turin), Marsèll (Milan), Spazio Oberdan, and Santarcangelo Festival 2024 (FONDO 2023).
