Don’t be frightened of turning the page begins with the observation of migratory phenomena in animals that, at the end of their lives, return to reproduce and to die in the place where they were born. In this work, the artist has explored the concept of turning (to turn, to return), an English term that is translated and represented on stage in a literal way through the action of the body rotating around its own axis, developing into a psychophysical and emotional journey. It is a durational dance that recalls the meaning of turning as evolving, changing. In keeping with the title of the project, the materials and physical scores are subject to change, evolution, and transformation, which take place within each individual event in which the work is presented. Each “version” of the performance involves different professionals invited to interpret the score according to their own sensibility. Among the versions already created is CHROMA_don’t be frightened of turning the page, the solo version performed by Alessandro Sciarroni himself, borrowing the title and subtitle respectively from Derek Jarman’s Chroma: A Book of Colour and from an album by Bright Eyes, his favorite rock band.
Alessandro Sciarroni is an Italian artist active in the performing arts, with a background in visual arts and theatrical research. His works are presented in festivals, museums, and unconventional spaces in Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. He collaborates with artists from different disciplines, adopting techniques from dance, circus, and sport. His creations explore—through repetition pushed to the limits of physical endurance—the obsessions, fears, and fragilities of the performative act, seeking an empathetic relationship between performers and spectators. In 2019 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance. He is an associate artist of Marche Teatro.
A journey into the aura of key practices and figures of spirituality and performance art between body, gesture and vision.
