14.06.2025/2.00 p.m. - 6.00 p.m.
This workshop offers an introduction to the fluid and harmonious technique of Odissi, one of India's classical dance forms. Following the tradition of master Debaprasad Das, renowned for his dynamic and grounded style, we will explore the fundamental elements of the dance: basic postures, rhythms, and expressions. Indian-born and internationally acclaimed dancer Sooraj Subramaniam will lead the workshop, exploring the connection between the rituality of gesture in traditional Indian arts and contemporary movement in an intensive dance and movement session. The workshop will also include an analysis of excerpts from the contemporary repertoire, providing an opportunity to experiment with new forms of creative expression through movement.
Sooraj Subramaniam is an internationally renowned choreographer, dancer, and innovator, trained in Bharatanatyam and Odissi at Sutra Dance Theatre, in Kathak under Urja Desai Thakore, and in Western classical dance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He has collaborated with Srishti, Akademi, Balbir Singh Dance Company, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, Nicole Kohler, Kalpana Raghuraman, Seeta Patel, and the Maghenta Collective. His work challenges aesthetic boundaries, blending Indian classical dance traditions with contemporary influences to create a hybrid and deeply personal artistic expression.
