Wild|Animal Memories is a contemporary composition that stems from the study of Kalaripayattu, the martial art originating in India and considered the mother of martial arts, and its derivations, such as Kung Fu and Wushu. Exploring the aesthetics and symbolism of animal figures in the Kalaripayattu, the performance creates a boundless space-time. Two figures dance mirroring each other, while an alter ego confronts the protagonist with her own limitations and vulnerability. The resulting journey invites us to reflect on the relationship between animal instinct and human rationality. From this inner struggle emerges the figure of the Warrior: a force that embodies physical and mental power, purity and precision. The Warrior undertakes a personal battle against the miseries, trivialities and littlenesses that inhabit the human soul, on a path of spiritual reconnection with her animal side and her deeper self.
Arianna Romano explores body practices rooted in Indian tradition through ongoing research that unfolds between Italy and India, articulated in a personal and contemporary language. In India, she undertook specific training, graduating in the martial art of Kalaripayattu at the renowned Kalarigram school, and completing the Advanced Training in Interpretation and Choreography (FAICC) at Compagnia Instável. Her research delves into the psychological sphere in relation to the concept of transcendence and spirituality—ranging from animal instincts and relational dynamics to the higher realms of metaphysical existence. Her martial and yogic training shapes both her artistic language and the themes she investigates, through a strong emphasis on technique. She is the choreographer and director of the performances Vislumbres do Além / Glimpses of Beyond, Purgatorio, Wild | Animal Memories, and From Above and From Within. She has worked as a performer with Gustavo Ciríaco, Roberta Carreri and Carolina Pizarro (Odin Teatret), Chiara Guidi (Societas Raffaello Sanzio), and Leonardo Delogu (Casa Dom); and as an assistant to Roberta Carreri and Carolina Pizarro at Odin Teatret.
